Why Manage Issues?
On any project, from the most complex enterprise software installation to the simplest home improvement project, issues tend to crop up. Issues are cases where reality doesn't mesh with project plans and assumptions. They can be as simple as software bugs, or can be more complex problems dealing with project scope changes, changing business conditions, or invalid assumptions. As issues crop up, the project team members must solve them in order to keep the project moving forward - and as issues pile up they can very quickly put an otherwise successful project into jeopardy in terms of cost, schedule, and completion!
So how should issues be dealt with? Successful project managers recognize that issues must be managed centrally, so that management has clear visibility to all the issues in a project, and everyone on the project team has equal visibility to what's going on and can help out where needed. Central issue management facilitates teamwork, by giving team members an easy way to communicate with one another about the issues.
With the right amount of discipline, a project team can quickly identify issues, capture them, assign them to the right person for completion and the right owner for tracking, and track progress against the issue to completion. This gives project managers a more accurate grasp of the project's status, helps to identify project risks and pitfalls, and provides a framework for solving problems and keeping the project on time and on budget.
